OpenAI’s groundbreaking text-to-video model, Sora, captured the world’s imagination when it was first teased in February 2024, showcasing hyper-realistic, physics-compliant video generation that felt straight out of science fiction. However, tracking its official release timeline involved a winding path of previews, iterations, and an eventual sunsetting of the service.
The Initial Unveiling and Long Wait
When OpenAI first announced Sora in early 2024, the public was treated to breathtaking sample clips featuring complex camera movements, multiple characters, and consistent lighting. Despite the massive hype, OpenAI kept the model tightly under wraps, granting access only to red teamers, visual artists, and select creative professionals to evaluate safety risks and creative utility. For months, eager creators tracked every rumor regarding a public release date.
Public Releases: From Gen-1 to Sora 2
The wait for public access finally broke in December 2024, when OpenAI rolled out the first generation of Sora to ChatGPT Plus and Pro users in select regions as part of its widespread product launches.
Building on that foundation, OpenAI accelerated its video efforts by unveiling Sora 2 on September 30, 2025. This major update introduced dedicated mobile apps for iOS and Android alongside deeper social integration, allowing users to generate high-definition clips directly from their phones. High-profile partnerships—such as a major collaboration with Disney announced late that year—signaled that text-to-video technology was rapidly entering mainstream commercial pipelines.
The Sunset of Sora
Despite the rapid evolution and initial excitement, the landscape of generative AI shifted quickly. Facing shifting product strategies and operational constraints, OpenAI announced the discontinuation of the standalone Sora experience. The Sora web app and mobile experiences officially shut down on April 26, 2026, with the developer API scheduled to follow on September 24, 2026.
While the dedicated Sora application lifecycle has concluded, the technology fundamentally altered the trajectory of media creation, establishing a baseline for how AI understands and simulates real-world physics.
