Strumming the Styx: Unlocking “The Gift of Song” in Supergiant’s Hades

In Supergiant Games’ critically acclaimed rogue-like masterpiece Hades, the Underworld is a realm defined by stone, blood, bureaucracy, and eternal punishment. Yet, tucked away in the corner of Zagreus’ bedchamber sits a modest, dusty instrument: a lyre.

For players willing to put in the time, this instrument becomes the centerpiece of one of the game’s most charming and quietly rewarding sub-quests: The Gift of Song. More than just a mechanical checklist, this minor prophecy bridges the gap between the Prince of the Underworld and Orpheus, the solemn master of music, offering a poignant look at art, patience, and finding beauty even in the land of the dead.

What is “The Gift of Song”?

“The Gift of Song” is a Minor Prophecy listed on the Fated List of Minor Prophecies in Zagreus’ room. The prophecy’s cryptic description reads:

“The son of the god of the dead shall someday learn to perform music halfway decently through the teachings of a solemn master of the art.”

Mechanically, completing this quest requires Zagreus to practice the lyre until he transitions from making agonizing, discordant screeches to actually playing pleasant, melodic tunes. Once mastered, Orpheus acknowledges Zagreus’ hidden talents, fulfilling the prophecy and netting the player a handsome reward of 2 Ambrosia.

The Path to Mastery: How the Quest Works

Unlike boons from the Olympian gods or weapon upgrades unlocked through darkness and titan blood, the lyre operates entirely on persistence and repetition.

  • The Grind: Every time Zagreus returns to the House of Hades after a run, the player can interact with the lyre. At first, Zagreus will strum a series of cringe-inducing, dissonant plucks, often apologizing to anyone within earshot.
  • The Milestones: Progress isn’t linear in a single sitting. Zagreus improves across specific dialogue checkpoints (roughly requiring interactions at milestones around 10, 60, 110, and upwards of 210+ total interactions).
  • Consulting the Master: Crucially, players cannot simply spam the interaction button all at once. After hitting certain thresholds of practice, you must converse with Orpheus. Orpheus will offer cryptic advice, critiques, and encouragement, which triggers the next phase of the Prince’s musical evolution.
  • The Breakthrough: After more than 200 interactions—and once Zagreus finally remarks that he actually knows what he’s doing—a final conversation with Orpheus clears the prophecy, unlocking the reward and cementing Zagreus as a musician in his own right.

Why It Matters: Art in the House of Hades

While 2 Ambrosia is a fantastic reward for upgrading relationships with your favorite gods and companions, the true value of “The Gift of Song” lies in its narrative texture.

Supergiant Games is renowned for weaving gameplay mechanics into emotional storytelling. At the start of the game, Orpheus is depressed, mute, and sequestered in a corner of the administrative lounge. His separation from Eurydice has drained the music from his soul. As Zagreus helps mend relationships across the Underworld—reuniting the musician with his lost love—Zagreus himself picks up the lyre.

By practicing the instrument poorly at first, Zagreus mirrors any beginner stumbling through a new craft. His early failures are met with humorous, self-deprecating dialogue. But through consistency, repetition, and the guidance of a master, the discord turns into harmony.
